Explanation

Objects buried underground or in different ground layer densities will create small disturbances in the earth's natural magnetic field where they focus the magnetic flow into a stronger field. A magnetometer or mag, also referred to as a gradiometer or proton magnetometer, is a piece of equipment that measures how these variations in the Earth's magnetic field affect the protons of the subsurface objects.

A modern magnetometer has the ability to store large numbers of results based on location, which can either be entered manually or supplied by some kind of measuring tool, such as an optional GPS receiver. This information is then entered into a computer and underground strata and objects can be mapped.

Uses in Archaeology

A magnetometer can be used in archaeology to map buried building foundations, find ancient fire hearths, and under the right conditions, even show the location of prehistoric walking paths.
